Science Saturday – Prince Rupert’s Drop

Destin, from Smarter Every Day, has been busy again and posted a great video on the indestructibility of the natural shape that is “Prince Rupert’s Drop” which is formed when glass is quick cooled in water, and explains the mechanics and physics behind the compression/tension forces within the drop which cause it to explode so spectacularly whenever the thinner end is broken.

For those of you who have a natural predisposition to dirty mind thinking, no, you’re getting confused with the “Prince Albert”, which is definitely not good “Science Saturday” material.

Sadly, unless you want to try burning your house down so you can melt your own glass, this one is probably best not attempted at home.

Remember, keep learning 🙂
