Well, didn’t I already mention this back in early October? Seems that the newspapers have only aught up to what I’m been saying for ages. The CBS released numbers this week stating that the number of obese people in the Netherlands has doubled in the last 20 years.
Not surprising whenever you take a look at the size of the people walking the aisles of the supermarket and the contents of their shopping basket. On top of that, you have to consider another fact that the food choice in the Netherlands is dominated by a handful of multinationals who pump tons of salts, sugar, palm oil, maize and corn syrup into their foods and then stick it into a jar or packet for the Dutch to heat up in a microwave to serve up for their evening meal.
Having come back from a recent trip to Ukraine, herself and I had so much fun buying home made foods from the “Babushka’s” selling freshly grown produce from their farms and fresh meats slaughtered from animals they raised themselves. Sure there are fat Russians, but it’s typically limited to the male of the species and is predominantly driven by the amount of alcohol they drink. The Dutch however are on the fast boat to American style obesity. They’ve copied all the worst things the US have introduced (health care US style, foreign policy, bullshit domestic politics to name but a few) so why shouldn’t being fat not be one of them too.
All I can say is that I am so happy herself knows how to cook without the need of a jar or packet. God bless the rest of the poor unfortunates who cannot.
